Well Hello There Strong Mamas!
I am so excited about this new system, WEEKEND RESET, I am trying out! I’ve been working it into our schedule for a few weeks and so far I am loving it and I want to share it with you! It’s not my idea, but I have tweaked what I have researched so it works for my family. I do most of my research for mama-stuff on Pinterest, and you can check out my Pinterest board on Weekend Resetting here (and while you’re at it you can follow me on Pinterest here, Instagram here and Facebook here) or check out my post on one of the tools I use to make it happen called “One of My Favorite Insanely Simple Family Management Tools.”IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU KNOW EVERYTHING IN THIS POST DOES NOT GET DONE EVERY WEEKEND. My goal is to do that, but, hey, sometimes life happens. For instance, I tried to get it all done this weekend but for some reason I just couldn’t get in gear, I was constantly interrupted and just didn’t manage my time well. No biggie. When I DO get the list done MY WEEK GOES BY LIKE I HAVE A PERSONAL ASSISTANT HANDLING MY BUSINESS. Seriously, if I put some work in on the weekend my week goes by like butter. So, here it is…
1- CHECK THE WEATHER FOR THE UPCOMING WEEK (so I know if I can rock my five inch pink satin pumps at carpool or rain boots are the better choice).
2- PLAN MY WEEK IN MY Erin Condren PLANNER
I LOVE THIS PLANNER. It took me a while to figure out how I would best use it (more on that in a different post). I also keep the Weekend Reset list on a red post-it note (to the right in this pic) that I cut to fit over my Sunday column (since that is when I do the lion share of the list). This post is basically everything on that list in the order it is written.
3- CHOSE MY OUTFITS, MAKE-UP AND HAIR
At least for the days I am not bumming in my pajamas with fur on my teeth. I hang up the outfits on the hanger that coincides with the day of the week. I made the tags out of cardstock and then just drew the letters on. Obviously, I have hangers for every day of the week including weekends, but they wouldn’t fit on the bed. As you can see, there are no clothes on these hangers because I didn’t get to this over the weekend. I found myself rushing and off schedule all week as a result.
Just 2 loads of essentials. Since I’ve already chosen my wardrobe for the week I know what pieces I will need to wash. I also throw in any important items I might have missed for the kids like uniforms, etc. If my loads are light I’ll try to wash bathroom rugs (especially in the boys’ bathroom. Ugh.)
I used to loathe laundry but it actually isn’t so bad anymore. There was a season of my life when I had about 20 loads a week. My inimitable husband does his own (he’s 6’5 and pants are hard to find so rather than risk me shrinking them he prefers to do them himself), my oldest daughter does her own, my oldest son does his and his little brother’s. All I have to do is mine and my middle girls (ages 10 and 11). So that’s around 10 loads a week, and all I do for my daughters is wash and dry. They are perfectly capable of sorting, folding and putting away. But even with that simplified process I still am never caught up!
5- SPIRITUAL MEAL PLANNING
“And what are your plans for nourishing this family I entrusted to you spiritually?”
That was a huge wake-up call for me. I spend a great deal of time learning about nutrition for teens, aging men (my old man is 50), aging women (my forty-something body AIN’T processing food the way it once did!), ADHD, acne care… you name it. But I devote FAR LESS time to how I will feed my kids spiritually. So, I take a few minutes to choose the material I will be going over with them for the week. I usually choose a devotional book so I don’t have to reinvent the wheel. And the WHEN is flexible. Sometimes it’s in the car in the morning, sometimes after school, sometimes at snack or dinner. I try (emphasis on TRY) to hit each kid once a day. These days since my teens are gone so much I text them a verse in the morning with a word from me, and I let them know I’m praying or have prayed for them. Other times I might put on a sermon in the car. It doesn’t matter how I get it in, all that matters is THAT I AM INTENTIONAL. If I have an idea of what resources I’m using I’m much more likely TO USE THEM.
6- BUDGET REVIEW
This is so important for me. There are 3 areas of my life in which I struggle to have balance and discipline: time, food and MONEY. This was an area of my faith I needed to get a hold of, and my solution was to review my account and expenses that I knew were coming up for the week. This way I know what to say to the kids when they want to go to the bookstore or the ice cream shop because I know how much money I’m working with.
7- MENU PLANNING AND GROCERY LIST

8- PLAN MY WORKOUTS AND MEALS
I LOVE THIS PORTION! I use the top section of my planner for my personal goals for the week. There I put what I hope to eat that day and when I can workout. I also might have the 3 most important things I MUST accomplish that day. I find the workouts go well but I’m still trying to have consistency with my nutrition. I try to fuel my body every two hours and stop all eating by 7:00pm, but, again, some days that just ain’t gonna happen!
9- TIDY MY TRUCK
It is so hard to be in the car for as much as I am (5 kids in 3 schools makes for some serious drive times) and have it trashed with toys, old food, old tissues, shoes, hats, sweatshirts, socks, coffee cups, sunglasses, etc. Life naturally comes with plenty of disorder so keeping the truck tidy makes a huge difference, ESPECIALLY with kids with learning differences who are prone to lose things. If the vehicle is clear of debris it makes it so much easier for them to find something they might have misplaced. I typically delegate this to one of the kids!
10- HOMEWORK BACKPACK READY TO GO
I keep an old backpack filled with homework resources we might need while we are on the go. It is always in the back of the truck. I have it down to a science, and I hope to get the post out on what I keep in it in the next few days! Stay tuned!
I give them a once over just to tidy, no cleaning. Especially in my closet! It is so hard to get dressed when you can’t see the floor!
A few of my kids go to specials outside of school to supplement their academic weaknesses (which is another reason I designed the Homework Backpack. When we are at specials everything we need for homework while we wait for a sibling is right there. No excuses!). Right now these are occupational therapy, speech therapy (for written expression) and tutoring. They have homework for these sometimes so I remind them to do that homework or review it for the week ahead. This is also the time I send any quick emails for updates, cancellations/reschedules and write the checks to the providers and put them in my planner.
13- I ALSO HAVE MY KIDS RESET
They have their own lists to do that I compiled over time to include all the top items that either need to be done, are often forgotten or just plain slow us down if we have to stop and do them during the week. For instance, having clean uniforms. Nothing slows down a morning faster than having to go upstairs and help a child find something to wear… especially if we end up rummaging through the hamper and spraying the contaminated item with the wrinkle-releasing spray. It is so much easier if the clothes are ready to go because I did those 2 loads of laundry earlier! Here’s their list:
- Gym uniforms clean and packed in their backpack
- Nails cut, hair detangled
- Uniforms ready to go
- Backpacks and lunches cleaned out (especially lunch boxes! I wish I had a dollar for every time we opened a lunch box to find the equivalent of rotting brains dipped in snail slime in the bottom of a lunchbox)
- Important papers handled field trip forms, good grades, bad grades (which are really good grades, more on that in another post), etc.
- Church clothes selected and checked to make sure they don’t look like they came out of a garbage dump during a zombie apocalypse
- Veggies for lunches done
- Areas done
So that is the Weekend Reset! I hope it inspires you to do something like it. I promise that if you bite the bullet and reset for your week it will make a world of difference. There are so many weeks I breeze through because my past-self has made life easier! There are so many great ideas out there, but these are the main ones I use to set my family up for success!
